Inside the Chuwar Conservation Reserve: Koala Kindy, Bush Regeneration and a Living Corridor

15 July 2026 Chuwar QLD

On 43.6 acres of Koala Bushland along Sandy Creek, Goodness Land Care is restoring a critical ecological corridor — and building koala rehabilitation enclosures with regional wildlife hospitals.

Tucked along the riparian zone of Sandy Creek in Chuwar sits 43.6 acres of officially zoned Koala Bushland — the Chuwar Conservation Reserve. It is one of those places that is easy to drive past without knowing it is there, but it forms a critical ecological corridor in South East Queensland. For Goodness Enterprises, it is also the heart of our environmental work, managed by Goodness Land Care, our commercial contracting division.

What makes this reserve different is the model behind it. Goodness Land Care employs qualified bush regenerators and landscapers to bid on environmental contracts for Ipswich City Council, state government bodies, and private landholders. Every dollar of profit from that commercial work is reinvested straight back into the reserve. Conservation here is not a charity expense — it is a self-sustaining social enterprise.

On the ground, that means riparian weed clearing across the Sandy Creek zone, removing lantana and noxious weeds, and propagating native seedlings to restore the canopy. It means protecting the koala population that relies on this bushland, including the development of specialised koala rehabilitation enclosures — a Koala Kindy — built in partnership with regional wildlife hospitals. Injured koalas get a safe place to recover before release back into habitat like ours.

The reserve is also a living classroom. Through our Nature Immersion trails, designed with university researchers, and our Outdoor Education Hub hosting regional schools, students learn hands-on, scientifically-backed methods for healing a local ecosystem. Many of those students come through our Skilling Queenslanders for Work traineeships, building sustainable careers in land management while doing work that genuinely matters.

Ipswich City Council's Koala Conservation and Habitat Management Plan sets out to protect, enhance, and increase koala habitat across the region. The Chuwar Conservation Reserve is our contribution to that goal — a place where commercial land care, wildlife rehabilitation, and education all meet. It is proof that a charity can run a conservation reserve properly, fund it through enterprise, and train the next generation of ecologists at the same time.

If you want to see it for yourself, or support the work — whether through a Goodness Land Care contract, a donation, or volunteering in the Volunteer Village conservation team — the door is open. The koalas do not know who funds their habitat. They just know it is still standing.
